The Oilers trade away Chris Wideman, who is an average 5v5 defender with some power-play upside, to obtain instead Alex Petrovic, who is clearly below average. They paid a third round pick for the privilege of downgrading their defence corps in this manner.

A move done for Hitch....clearly didn’t like Wideman.

Over his career, Petrovic has double the assists at 5 on 5 than Wideman. Wideman is a better goal scorer, but Petrovic has proven to be the better player at EV.

Preaching to the choir mate. It's another chiar shuffling move by a GM trying to save his own skin. I think Petrovic will be a better fit under this Hitchcock system but it still doesn't solve anything.

There are things I can appreciate about his game (historically solid chance share, solid shot metrics, good PK guy), but I'm not convinced they're going to manifest under the conditions he'll been playing in here.

To clarify, there are also a number of things I don't like about his game and his results. His HD conversion ratio relative to his team is off-putting as are his HD chance share numbers this year.

He's between Gravel and Larsson for stifling HD chances on the PK so I'll happily take that over what Wideman brought (quite honestly nothing). If he can find solace under Hitch and really root his game in simplicity, he could rebound back to last year's levels of defending which, for around 17 minutes/game, could be a solid addition.

That would be nice. You just seem to need a dman who can drive the plays more than another #4 shut down dman.
